BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Reece Strong connected on a 30 yard field goal with 1:31 left in the game, leading Richlands to a thrilling 24-22 win at Bullitt Park in the first home game for Union since the consolidation of Powell Valley and Appalachia high schools.
Strong did it with his feet and his arm. The senior threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns, including a 34-yard first quarter pass to A.J. Johnson, and another 17-yard scoring toss to Johnson in the third.
Strong also had a 1-yard scoring run in the second period that gave the Blue Tornado a 14-13 lead the break.
Tyler Barker led Union (1-1) with 103 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards in the second quarter, and added a 4-yard run to give Union a 22-21 lead in the final period.
