HINTON — Class A No. 17 Meadow Bridge rolled into Hinto and shocked Class AA No. 9 Summers County.
Meadow Bridge opened the game with an onside kick, but could not take advantage as they fumbled their opening possession. The fumble would be a sign of things to come for the Wildcats as they fumbled two more times in the opening half and could not find the end zone.
Summers County (6-2) initially returned the favor to the Wildcats with an interception and a turnover on downs, but Matt Ryan would come alive in the second quarter with a 14-yard pass the Nathan Grimmett for a score and a 14-yard run to put the Bobcats up 14-0 at the half.
The second half opened just as the first with a Meadow Bridge fumble, but the Wildcats would hold on downs and finally come alive on offense.
Lawson Patterson scored from 42 yards out and Chris Simms added the 2-pt conversion to make the score 14-8.
Summers County would not be shaken as they responded with a 14-yard run by Tucker Lilly to push the lead back to 21-7.
But, the story of the second half was the inability of Summers County to contain the Meadow Bridge runners. Simms scored on a one-yard run and Shane Harless gave the Wildcats their first lead at 22-21 with a five-yard run and 2-point conversion early in the fourth quarter.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Bobcats again mis-handled the kick-off and Meadow Bridge (5-3) dove on the ball leading to a 16-yard Dylan Walker score and a 28-21 lead.
Summers County had the ball with just under two minutes, but could not score on their final possession.
Jimmy Richmond came up big for the Wildcats on defense with 14 tackles and Harless had 13 tackles.
Meadow Bridge (5-3) hosts Sherman Friday and Summers County (6-2) is off Friday, then travels to Richwood in two weeks.
