WELCH - Mount View took to the airways Friday night to record a 26-6 win, the second victory in as many weeks, over the visiting Van Bulldogs at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Senior quarterback Teddy Hazzard connected on 12-of-17 passes, for 176 yards and three scores to pace the Golden Knights offensively.
Fellow senior Maurice Brown snagged half those tosses for 81 yards and one score, while Juwan Diggs, a sophomore, and LaQuell Martin, a junior, grabbed a TD aerial apiece.
Hazzard, who rushed 16 times for 79 yards, added the other View score on a one yard scamper.
The fans had hardly had time to settle into their seats when lightning, figuratively, not literally, struck twice in the first 36 seconds of the game. Van received the opening kickoff and set up shop, albeit ever so briefly, at its own 30 yard stripe following a Justin Lambert return.
On the Bulldogs’ first snap, quarterback Brandon Elswick handed off to Brandon Perry, who swept left. Perry then flipped back to Lambert, a junior, who rolled right, stopped and fired a perfect pass downfield to a wide open Logan Crouse, who completed a 70 yard pass-and-run touchdown only 22 seconds into the opening frame.
A hush fell over the stunned Mount View faithful.
Related Van head coach Steve Price of the early score, “We struggle offensively. We wanted to jump on them quick.”
That hush erupted in cheers only 14 ticks later when Hazzard took the initial Knight snap and perfectly hit Martin in stride for a 66 yard answering score. Diggs ran the conversion to give the View an 8-6 lead only 36 seconds into the contest.
The host defense forced a punt on Van’s ensuing series and took the pigskin at the Golden Knight 32, where Hazzard launched his club on a 6 play, 68 yard march that came to fruition when Hazzard connected with Diggs from 11 yards out.
Turnovers by both teams marred the middle two quarters, with the score remaining 14-6 entering the final stanza.
Knight senior Bryan Villaneuva recovered a Bulldog fumble late in the third to start a 12 play, 75 yard drive that spanned the final two chapters and was capped by Hazzard’s four yard ramble off the left side to extend the advantage to 20-6 with 8:57 remaining in the contest.
Late in the period, the View defense held and took possession on downs at midfield.
On the fourth play of the march, Hazzard tossed a 13 yard scoring pass to Brown in the back corner of the endzone for the final 26-6 win.
Pleased with the win, but not with the play of his team, first year Mount View head coach Todd McCoy remarked, “I felt like we played a pretty sloppy game. I wasn’t at all satisfield with the way we played, especially in the first half.”
Bearing out Coach McCoy’s thoughts, the Knights lost five of six fumbles and were penalized 14 times for 110 yards.
On the positive side, to go with the victory, Mount View rolled up 368 total yards, including 192 on the ground to go with Hazzard’s 176 passing.
The Golden Knights move to 2-4 with the decision and will entertain Fayetteville for homecoming next Friday night.
Meanwhile, Van will return home to host Clay-Battelle Friday night. The Bulldogs are now 1-5.
