WELCH — The unbeaten and class AA third-ranked River View Raiders scored in every quarter, while amassing 473 yards of total offense to drop Liberty (Raleigh) 42-8 at Vic Nystrom Stadium on Friday night.
Senior quarterback Jacob Muncy completed 9-of-14 passes for 244 yards and three scores to pace River View to its eighth win in as many starts.
Muncy completed at least two passes to three different targets.
Senior Chad Franklin snared four tosses for 127 yards, while senior LeShon Benton grabbed three passes for 38 yards and junior Brandon Thomas caught a pair for 79 yards. Each of those three receivers scored in the victory.
Sophomore fullback Joseph McClanahan entered the contest early in the first quarter when Trey Bailey suffered a knee injury and McClanahan found pay dirt twice for River View, with freshman Jordan Wilson adding the other score.
River View scored on only the fourth play of the game when Muncy found a wide-open Thomas over the middle for a 53-yard pass-and-run play, only 1:22 into the first quarter.
With 3:37 showing in the initial frame, McClanahan capped a 7-play, 81-yard march with a one-yard burst up the middle to extend the advantage to 14-0 after Muncy passed to Trey Lockhart for the extra point.
At the 5:41 of the second period, Muncy dialed long distance again, connecting with Franklin on a 58-yard bell-ringer.
After stopping Liberty’s opening series of the second half, Muncy hurled a perfect pass to Benton in the right corner of the end zone for a 28-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the third, following Wilson’s conversion run.
River View mounted an uncharacteristically long drive, play-wise late in the third that concluded a minute and half into the fourth.
McClanahan’s five-yard jaunt capped a nine-play, 79-march, and after Muncy passed to Benton for the extra point, the View lead 36-0.
Liberty found the end zone with 8:50 showing in the contest on a beautiful Joey Lacek to Jacob Adkins pass that covered 34 yard.
Trey Fitzwater, who rushed 23 times for 109 yards on the evening, ran the conversion to cut the lead to 36-8.
Wilson, who led the River View running game with 66 yards on only six attempts, raced off the right side, breaking tackles along the way for a 28-yard touchdown with 5:30 left in the game for the final 42-8 score.
River View head coach Mitch Estep talked of the hard-hitting game, “That’s probably the first time this year we’ve put four quarters of physical play together and in all phases of the game. They (River View players) responded very aggressively on defense and they attacked on offense... It was a good, good win for us.”
Commenting on his teams defense effort, Estep continued, “We went back to some of the principals, our two concepts the last week have been communication and commitment. You have to communicate to each other what you’re doing and you have to commit to it.
We haven’t been doing that. That was our focus tonight.”
The View will travel Hamlin Friday night to face Lincoln County.
Assessed Liberty head coach Jeff Alexander, “They’re just a real good football team in every aspect of the game... That probably is the best football team we’ve seen this year.”
Liberty, now 4-4, will return home to host top-ranked Shady Spring next Friday night.
