WELCH — Mount View played its first home game of the season Friday night at Vic Nystrom Stadium, but it was the visiting Liberty Raleigh Raiders who celebrated, taking a 50-0 victory over the Golden Knights.
The now 3-1 Raiders scored on all five first half possessions, building a 32-0 halftime advantage en route to the half-century win.
Junior tailback Christian Whittaker scored five of the eight Liberty touchdowns, all on the ground, while netting 110 yards on 15 attempts rushing.
Whittaker’s scores covered 4, 3, 1, 3 and 16 yards.
Junior quarterback Hunter Wright threw for a pair of touchdowns, one to Tre’shaun McDowell from 4 yards out and another that covered 25 yards to Jake Lacek.
Quarterback Trenton Begley, a freshman, played the final chapter and scored on a 17 yard ramble.
Assessed Raider head coach Jeff Alexander, “We wanted to get out and clean up some things. We didn’t play as good as I thought we should have. That’s because of them (Knights). They’ve got athletes everywhere and they’ve got speed and you’ve got to respect that speed.”
Praising his defense’s overall play, Alexander continued, “The defense played good in spurts…We’ve got Sherman coming up for Homecoming next week.”
Mount View, blanked for the second consecutive week and having scored only 20 points in four games, moved senior Tim Nowlin to quarterback in hopes of getting some movement. Nowlin responded with several fine runs, but the View still did not find the end zone.
Related first year Mount View head coach Larry Thompson, “I’ve seen improvement (from the opening week until now), but it’s not consistent improvement. I see bright spots. It’s hard to break a mind-set.”
Speaking of an open week next week, Thompson continued, “We desperately needed it. I wanted to go into the (off week) with a win, with some momentum. We’ve just got to regroup and come back in two weeks.”
Mistakes continued to plague the Knights, with a lost fumble, a pass interception and punts of 2 and 8 yards leading to four of the five Liberty first half touchdowns.
The Raiders, meanwhile, used each Mount View mistake to put points on the brand new scoreboard at Nystrom Stadium, while allowing the Knights to get no closer to a touchdown than the Liberty 26 in the opening half. The View did not enter Raider territory in the final two quarters.
After next week’s hiatus, the Golden Knights, now 0-4, will host Chapmanville on October 3.
