FAIRLEA — Bluefield victimized Greenbrier East’s gambling tendencies and cruised to a 57-18 win over the Spartans at Fairlea Friday night.
The Beavers put a 59-yard first-possession drive together, scoring on D.J. Stewart’s 2-yard run with 9:51 left in the period.
On GE’s ensuing possession, the Spartans went for it on fourth and 8 from their own 22. The Beavers’ defense was equal to the task. Given the short field, Bluefield quickly rang up its second touchdown on a 3-yard Cory Coppola dive.
After GE faked going for it on fourth and 20 at its own 20, Bluefield blocked a Spartans’ quick-kick, and one play later Stewart scored his second touchdown of the period.
Beaver led 20-0 after one frame.
Bluefield added its fourth touchdown of the game on a 36-yard Stewart run on the Beavers’ first possession of the second period.
Greenbrier East cracked paydirt at the 5:40 mark in the half, when quarterback Isaiah Kinder hooked up with fullback Ben Allen on a 19-yard pass.
Bluefield added another score on a 4-yard sweep left by halfback Charles Ross, and on the final play of the half, Francesco Desiderio nailed a 41-yard field goal. The Beavers took a 37-6 lead into the locker room.
Greenbrier fumbled on its first play from scrimmage in the third period, and Coppola alertly recovered and returned the ball 25 yards for a score.
After the Spartans failed to convert on another fourth down, Beaver took over at the GE 32. Fullback Brennan Wheeler sprinted left for 32 yards and a touchdown, and the Beavers led 50-6.
Coppola closed Bluefield’s scoring with a 70-yard run up the middle following a late GE touchdown, and Bluefield led 57-12 entering the final period.
Backup Spartans quarterback Jonathan Carr connected with Matt Beard on a 62-yard scoring aerial with 10 seconds left in the game to close the scoring.
Coppola led all rushers with 151 yards on 11 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Stewart, also scoring three touchdowns, ran for 124 yards on 16 carries.
Bluefield (3-1) returns home to face Richlands next Friday.
