HONAKER, Va. — After weeks of putting Haysi on the back burner, Honaker can at long last focus on next week’s BDD showdown.
Despite an early challenge from a fired-up Grundy defense the Tigers pulled away to a 47-6 win over the Golden Wave Friday night at Emats Stadium.
Casey Dye ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more for Honaker, which will take its 9-0 record to 9-0 Haysi next week.
Grundy stopped the Tigers on their first two series before a series of mistakes by the Golden Wave helped get the Honaker offense untracked.
The Tigers took a 26-0 halftime lead and all four possessions started in Grundy territory.
“We definitely need to capitalize when they turn the ball over,” said Dye, who ran for 97 yards and threw for 75 more. “That’s just another possession that they don’t get. We need to take advantage of every mistake they make.”
Grundy made its share of mistakes, turning the ball over four times, including three times in the first half and turning a snap on a punt attempt into a 40-yard loss that led to Dye’s first TD run.
“The score may say otherwise, but the defense really played better, you can’t really hang this on our defense,” said Grundy coach Jeremy Ward, whose defense has allowed over 42 points per game this season. “They got put in some bad spots.
“On the offensive side we got to move the ball down the field, when we open up holes we got to hit it and we got to sustain our blocks. It’s the same thing that’s hurt us the whole year.”
Dye added a 34-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and used his scrambling ability on his two TD passes. He hit a sliding Jarred Corns in the back of the end zone in the first period and found Randy Horton wide open for a 25-yard scoring strike in the third quarter.
The Honaker defense, meanwhile, held Grundy (3-6) to 67 yards of total offense and minus-15 yards on the ground.
“I thought our defense played well the whole night,” said Honaker coach Doug Hubbard.
Hayden Horn filled in for Austin Smith in Honaker’s deep backfield and ran 28 yards to set up his 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Makenzie Phillips set up his third quarter one-yard TD plunge with a 30-yard run.
“We don’t lose anything when those guys come in,” added Dye. “We can’t give it to Avin (Parrott), Chase (Johnson), Phillips, anybody and they’ll make the play for us.”
Parrott came up with two interceptions and Johnson had one pick to go with eight tackles and two sacks. Horn led Honaker with 11 total tackles.
Bryson Bostic added a 17-yard TD run for Honaker with 2:50 remaining. Grundy got its only points when Cody Puckett returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.
Next up for the undefeated Tigers: the undefeated Tigers.
“I guess it’s here,” said Hubbard with a smile. “This is what makes it fun and exciting and I know the whole Haysi community is excited just like ours is. It’s good to see two Black Diamond District teams 9-0.”
