WELCH — Vic Nystrom Stadium’s playing surface was very conducive to the running attack of Westside Friday evening.
Rain over the past two days had rendered the field to look more like a venue for a mud bog than a setting for a football game.
The Renegades of Westside, now 7-1 on the season and ranked sixth in this week’s Class AA rankings, scored on plays of 30 or more yards on five of their eight touchdowns to chalk up a 56-12 win over Mount View.
The loss spoiled homecoming for the Golden Knights and extended the current longest losing streak in the state to 26 games, going back to the third contest of 2009 for the Knights.
Freshman Mike Mullens started the contest off with a bang, fielding the opening kickoff at the Westside 16 and exploding 84 yards up the middle for a score before the homecoming royalty had found their seats.
On the next Renegade series, quarterback Dylan Newsome scooted nine yards for the six and with Thomas Forren’s conversion run, Westside led 15-0 with 6:31 showing in the first.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening period, Newsome went back to pass from his own 35. The ball slipped from his hands, but he quickly found the handle and threw in the left flat to Justin Tilley, who made a shoestring grab, ran over a would-be tackler and ended up 65 yards later with the third TD of the first quarter, extending the lead to 20-0.
That pass would be the only one Westside would throw all evening.
Forren capped a seven-play, 30-yard drive with 2:19 left in the half by running off-tackle for a five-yard touchdown.
Mullens added the extra points on a run for a 28-0 Westside advantage at the break.
Justin Tilley’s twin brother Dustin galloped for a 30-yard score 3:11 into the third period, and after Forren tacked on the PAT on a run, the Wyoming countians led 36-0.
Junior Tashaan Vineyard put the Knights on the board with a two-yard burst with 11 ticks remaining in the third.
The fourth was a wild scoring marathon, with the Renegades adding three TDs and the Golden Knights finding the end zone once more.
Mullens reeled off a 72-yarder around right end only 55 seconds into the final chapter to extend the lead to 42-6.
Freshman quarterback Kyle Goodson rambled 44 yards around left end at the 3:33 mark for the Renegades to go up 48-6.
Knights sophomore Laquell Martin took the ensuing kickoff 71 yards the other way for a six-pointer for Mount View only 15 seconds later.
Westside came right back with a Hunter Walker 60-yard dash around left end with 2:44 remaining. Dougie Lester ran the extra points following that capper.
Related Westside head coach Darren Thomas of the wet field, “We didn’t change a thing. We like to run the football, and with Dustin and Justin (each 6 foot 2 inches and 245 and 250 pounds respectively) Tilley, it didn’t bother us a bit.”
Continued Thomas, in his sixth season at the Renegade helm, “These kids are really great to coach. They work hard and do what we ask them to do.”
Westside will return home to host River View on Friday night in the regular-season finale for both teams. Mount View, now 0-9, will entertain Grundy, Va., Friday night in the final home game ever at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
