LINDSIDE — Nicholas County held off a final James Monroe rally on Friday night to win its fourth straight game, 25-19 on Friday night in Monroe County.
The visiting Grizzlies recovered a high snap that was mishandled by the Mavericks for the game’s first score. After holding James Monroe to a three-and-out, Nicholas County got its second early touchdown by converting a fourth and goal from the Mavericks’ 1 yard line.
Late in the first quarter, James Monroe quarterback Reed McNeer connected with Josh Dransfield to convert a third and 25 into a first down, and Grant Mohler scored on a five-yard run at the start of the second quarter.
At the 6:23 mark Mohler scored his second TD of the night with 6:23 left in the half to knot the score 13-13.
The Grizzlies answered back late in the second quarter with another touchdown to led 19-13 at intermission.
The Mavericks’ special teams will help close out the quarter by downing a 64 yard punt from Evan Beasley at the Grizzlies’ 2 yard line. Beasley also booted a 60-yard punt in the scoreless third period.
Nicholas County converted on a 4th and 1 and scored their fourth touchdown of the evening with only six seconds gone off the clock in the fourth.
The Mavericks’ next possession looked like it was going to end but Beasley ran for a first down on a fake punt on fourth and 14. The drive ended, however, with the Grizzlies picking off a Mavericks’ pass.
James Monroe capped the scoring with a 54-yard drive after a short punt by the Grizzlies. McNeer connected with Josh Dransfield and then to Seth Havens for a pair of completions, and the drive was helped out by a roughing the passer penalty by the Grizzlies.
McNeer ran the ball into the end zone on a third down and goal to pull the Mavericks within six points.
James Monroe’s onside kick attempt went out of bounds to the Grizzlies, who pulled a fake punt of their own a fourth and six with 35 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a first down. One kneel-down secured the win.
The Mavericks wind up their four-week homestand by hosting Westside on Friday, while Nicholas County hosts Webster County.
