WELCH — The Mount View Golden Knights celebrated homecoming 2012 with fireworks last night at Vic Nystrom Stadium to take a 19-12 win over the Fayetteville Pirates.
The fireworks came in the figurative sense, with the three Knight scores coming on explosive plays of 77, 47 and 59 yards, all in the opening half, as the View won its third game in a row to up the season slate to 3-4.
Freshman quarterback Chris Muncy played the entire game for the Mount View eleven, completing 7-of-13 passes for 133 yards and the final two touchdowns.
Junior speedster LaQuell Martin accounted for two of those scores, one rushing and the other on a pass reception. Martin finished his night’s work with 14 rushes for 208 yards and 44 more on a pair of pass grabs.
The Mount View defense held on downs at its own 28 to thwart the Pirates initial drive of the evening.
On the second snap, following aln illegal procedure flag and an incomplete pass, Martin started off the right side, cut toward the View sideline and did not stop until he had reached the endzone, some 77 yards later. That opening score came with only 4:35 elapsed off the first quarter clock.
Junior Jacob Alton intercepted a Golden Knight pass on the third play of the second quarter, but was tackled at the Fayetteville two.
The visitors launched a nine play, 98 yard drive that knotted the score at 6 when fullback Hunter Pullens burst in from two yards out with 7:15 showing in the half.
Senior Tracy Lovins accounted for 85 yards in the march on four rushes of 21, 15, 3 and 46 yards.
Coach Todd McCoy’s Knights bounced right back when Muncy lofted a pass down the left sideline that bounced into and out of the hands of Alton and into the awaiting grasp of Martin, who raced goalward to complete a 47 yard pass-and-run to put Mount View back in the lead.
Senior Maurice Brown booted the PAT to extend the lead to 13-6 with 5:49 remaining before intermission.
Knight junior Terry Horne, who had a sterling defensive game, recovered a Pirate fumble at the Fayetteville 47, after a jarring Brown tackle had caused the miscue.
Four penalties, three of 5 yards and one of 10, moved the football back to the View 41.
With time running out in the half, Muncy rolled right and threw to a wide open Brown for a 49 yard TD with 1:35 left in the half.
The score stayed there until a Lovins 51 yard punt return late in the closing chapter carried to the Mount View 11.
With 33 ticks left in the game, Alton ran the wildcat to perfection to pull the now 0-7 Pirates to within seven, at 19-12.
Mount View took the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock for the victory.
Related veteran Pirate head coach Frank Spangler, “I thought our kids played hard the second half. We gave a good effort the second half. ... We’re a young football team. Mistakes are what are killing us. It’s been like that all year.”
The Pirates are open next week before facing Greenbrier West in week 9.
Analyzed McCoy, “I thought Chris Muncy did a heck of a job for a freshman. ... It was a group effort. Giving up twelve points isn’t too bad.”
Mount View is also off next Friday and will entertain Meadow Bridge in the final home game in 2012 two weeks from last night.
At halftime, six former Welch Maroon Wave players from 1952 helped celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Stadium. Four former cheerleaders, including the 1952 homecoming queen, Beverly Boothe Boyd, and the former head majorette from that season were also in attendance and were introduced during the break.
