GARDNER — The home-standing PikeView Panthers gave top ranked, Class AA Shady Spring a 24-minute-long reality check, but the visitors from Raleigh County rode three big-play, third quarter scores on their way to a 41-19 victory that kept their perfect 4-0 season intact.
“Give credit to PikeView,” Shady Springs Coach Vince Culicerto said. “They came out here with a good game plan, changed defenses around on us to give us some different looks, and put us in a position we haven’t been in all season — tied at half-time.
“That’s the first time we’ve had that test to overcome in the second half this year.”
The Panthers came out in the first quarter and scored on a 75-yard, 13-play drive aided by a pair of Shady Spring penalties that ended when PikeView’s David Keen followed his left guard D.J. Green into the end zone for the game’s first score with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers clawed their way back into the game on a five-play drive, capped off by Adam Weeks connecting on a 17-yard scoring strike to a wide open Scott Daniels with 4:38 left in the quarter. PikeView helped out by shortening the field for the visitors on a botched on-sides kick-off attempt.
Both teams squared off in a rock-em, sock-em style game through the second quarter, with PikeView controlling tempo, running 22 offensive plays to Shady’s 10 offensive plays in the quarter. Weeks moved the ball in the air, but Chris McBride picked off a pass to end one offensive threat, and snuffed out a scoring threat.
“I think our kids played a solid, fundamental football game tonight,” PikeView Coach Jeff Damewood said. “For a half, we gave Shady Spring everything they could handle and played them even.
“But they’re an excellent team, and they came out and did what they had to do in the third quarter to get control of the game,” Damewood said. “Our kids didn’t give up though, and I’m proud of the way they kept working. They did everything we asked them to do, and I’m very proud of this team.”
Shady came out firing in the third quarter with Weeks scrambling for 25 yards on the second play from scrimmage, then finishing a 9-play drive with a one-yard sneak behind the blocking of Tyler Harper and Logan Hartsog.
After the ensuing kickoff, PikeView’s Keen picked up a first down on two runs up the middle — the first a busted play — but Shady’s rush caused an errant pass and Shady Springs linebacker Marshall Meadows picked off Keen’s pass and rumbled to the end zone on a 65-yard interception return with 5:42v left in the third quarter.
After PikeView went three and out on its next possession, Weeks moved 78-yards on a 3-play drive with the big play being an 81-yard pass and run to a wide open Chase Conner.
Shady continued the offensive onslaught with 31 seconds gone in the fourth quarter when Austin Johnson connected on a halfback pass to Conner. PikeView answered that score when Keen pounded inside for a one-yard score with 7:48, left in the game, but Shady answered with a 9-play drive on the ground that took five minutes off the clock.
“That was a good test for us to have,” Culicerto said. “Our guys came out in the second half, made some big plays then showed we could drive the football with our ground game.
“We’ve been able to make big plays all season long. On defense, we were soft in the middle, and concentrated on the outside. They had a good game plan and took advantage of what was there.”
PikeView’s Jordan Hardin scored on a 2-yard quarterback sneak as time expired, and the teams met at midfield and shook hands.
PikeView, 1-3, will host Greenbrier West next Friday while Shady Springs will return home to face Oak Hill.
