HURLEY, Va. — Inside-out or outside-in, Hurley can run and it isn't worried about who does the running or which route they take.
This week Brady Justice did the honors.
Justice ran for 257 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rebels to a 66-8 rout of Buchanan County rival Grundy Friday night at Smiley Ratliff Field at The Cliff.
It was Hurley's first win over the Golden Wave since 1991 and they took command early, jumping out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Justice broke free on a series of simple traps on touchdown runs of 71, 44, 35 and 50 yards, all in the first half.
"You try to come every game and get motivated, that just gave us more motivation for tonight," Justice said. "They were trying to take the edge away, but I told my linemen it was them out there tonight it wasn't me. We just come out ready to hit, ready to be physical and ready to run."
It was an emotional win for Hurley coach Greg Tester after consectuive, close and frustrating losses to the Golden Wave the last two years.
"I told them they were stray dogs when they came out tonight and if they weren't a dog I told them not to come out," he said.
"They were stacking the edge and they were ready for Traquan (Oliver) outside, but all we did was run the trap all night.
"We got backs that can run outside and inside. You take this away we can do that. I'm happy for these guys, I'm happy for this community. We finally got that monkey off our back."
Grundy keyed on Rebel senior Traquan Oliver, who came into the contest with 329 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Oliver scored the first TD on a 38-yard run just four plays into the game and finished with 96 yards on just five carries.
Grundy moved the ball well at times, but turned the ball over three times. The only Wave TD came on a 66-yard pass from Dylan Wolford to Cody Puckett.
Zack Lester added a 53-yard TD pass to Josh Mullins and the Rebels also got scoring runs from Devin Tester and Chris Spencer.
Late in the game Hurley senior Rachel McCoy may have become the first girl to score in a varsity football game, other than kicking an extra point or a field goal when she made an excellent catch for a two-point conversion.
Hurley held the Golden Wave to 101 yards rushing.
"Defense we had a couple of blown coverages there in the second half, but our defense was there for us all night I can't say enough about them," Tester added.
"I have to give all the credit to may coaching staff for the great job they did preparing all week and the great job they did throughout the game.
“My staff this year has been a big plus."
