NEW RICHMOND — Any running back who values his pursuit of 1,000 yards knows he better credit his offensive line at every opportunity.
When that running back wears a lineman’s number, you can take his words to heart.
Chris Cecil, Wyoming East’s do-it-all senior, scored three touchdowns and kicked a 19-yard field goal, and Wyoming East handed Class AA No. 6 Summers County its first loss, 33-20 Friday night.
Wearing No. 65 and looking like a tackle at 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds, Cecil pounded out 72 yards and scored on runs of 4, 1 and 1 yards. His hard-running style was a complement to the style of junior Jacob Summe, who used his speed to get around the edges.
The duo did the bulk of the work for the Warriors (3-1). While Cecil had 15 carries, Summe took the ball 36 times and gained 196 yards.
Together, Cecil and Summe carried on 51 of Wyoming East’s 60 plays.
Yet, Cecil doesn’t take credit and doesn’t allows Summe to take it, either.
“We’re not the workhorses at all,” Cecil said. “It’s the o-line all the way. All we have to do is run behind them. They give us a hole every time.”
Cecil is also the Warriors’ placekicker, and he connected on two extra points and a 19-yard field goal that put East ahead 25-14 with 3:04 to play in the third.
He is also a linebacker on a defense that got pressure all night on the Summers County duo of quarterback T.J. Smith and running back Isaiah Brown.
Smith and Brown were able to strike early, connecting on a 40-yard touchdown play less than two minutes into the game. But they were bottled up the rest of the way. Smith did finish with 95 yards on 19 carries, but 54 of those came on a second-quarter touchdown.
Brown was held to 25 yards on 10 carries.
Of course, much of the Bobcats’ struggle was of their own doing.
Six snaps flew over Smith’s head in the shotgun formation to thwart the offense throughout the first half. One led to a loose ball that Jeffery Dishmon fell on for the Warriors at the Summers 17-yard line. That set up Cecil’s first score that put East ahead 13-8 halfway through the first.
Another led to a Wyoming East safety nearly eight minutes later to give the Warriors a 15-8 advantage.
Cecil’s field goal came on a drive that was aided by a personal foul penalty against Summers (3-1).
“It was a bad performance, but you can’t take anything away from them,” Summers coach Josh Houchins said. “They played hard and hit hard. They had a big line up front and good hard runners, and we knew that. But we should have been able to play better. There was absolutely nothing that we can hang our hats on.”
Summers defensive back Cody Harrah was taken off the field by ambulance with a severe leg injury at the 7:43 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Warriors will try to carry the momentum into next Friday’s game at Mount View. The Bobcats face a tough task, going to Class A No. 1 Greenbrier West.
