GARY DOVE for the Daily Telegraph
WELCH — River View unleashed a dazzling passing attack and rolled up a 30-0 half time lead Friday night at Vic Nystrom Stadium en route to a 36-14 victory over Mount View in the season opener for both teams.
Senior quarterback Jacob Muncy connected with Leshon Benton five times for 124 yards, a pair of touchdown and two-point conversions to pace the 1-0 Raiders.
Senior half back John Bailey added two scores on the ground to lead River View’s rushing attack.
“Other than a fumble and some penalties, I thought the kids played well in all phases of the game,” River View head coach Mitch Estep said.
The Golden Knights won the pre-game coin toss, but the River View took an 8-0 first quarter lead when Muncy marched the Raiders goalward in ten plays, all rushes, and capped the 61-yard drive when Bailey bulled up the middle and then bounced outside from 10 yards out 4:28 into the contest.
Muncy passed to the 6-foot-4 Benton for the extra points and the eight-point lead.
River View scored again on its second series of the second quarter when Muncy hooked up with Benton on a slant pass for a 47-yard bell ringer with 8:54 showing before half time.
The defense held Mount View and took over at the Golden Knight 14 after a partially blocked punt. John Bailey followed a 4-yard run with a 10-yard run around left end at the 6:11 mark.
Following a second Muncy-to-Benton conversion fling, the Raiders led 22-0.
River View built the lead to 24-0 with 3:41 to go when a a swarm of River View defenders tackled the Mount View punter in his own end zone for a safety.
It appeared as though time ran out in the half with the Raiders at the Mount View 45. After the officials ruled, there were two seconds remaining, Muncy connected with Benton on a beautiful pass down the right sideline to extend the lead to 30-0.
A delay of more an hour came 19 seconds into the second half when Mount View junior end Antoine Calloway, the target of a string pass, was knocked loose from the football at the Knight 46.
As a precaution, Calloway was immobilized and tended by personnel from both teams prior to being taken to the hospital. There was no report on Calloway after the game.
River View extended their lead to 36-0 in a 10-yard run with 1:30 left in third quarter by Matthew Thornsbury.
Mount View got on the board with 3:02 left in the game on a 13-yard scoring pass from Teddy Hazzard to Trey Huckleberry, and Hazzard added the extra point kick.
The Knights scored again with 34 seconds left on a 21-yard keeper, also by Hazard.
Mount View returns to action on Friday by hosting Man, while River View will play PikeView on Saturday, also in Welch.
