Pioneers mash Bluefield playoff hopes

Small crowd on a cool night has filed into Mitchell Stadium prior to kickoff of the Bluefield-Wayne game which concludes the regular season.

Kick-off is underway, Justin Mariotti kicks the ball to Wayne. Wayne starts first and ten from their own 29-yard line.

Wayne fumbles the ball but recovers it on the Beaver 49-yard line.

Wayne scores a 49-yard touchdown run from Tyler Adkins. Wayne is historically known for taking two-point conversions, the attempt is denied. It is Wayne 6, Bluefield 0.

Bluefield Beavers QB DJ Edwards is unable to start in the game. The Beavers put in sophomore Justin Carter in the QB position.

Bluefield gets the ball with and Justin Carter at QB. Brad Fox makes it to the 49 yard line on 3rd and 9.

Bluefield calls timeout as play clock expires.

Brad Fox continues to run for the Beavers as he gets a first down.

Leggett receives the ball but is short of the first down. On fourth and two they are in field goal range, Bluefield goes for the first down.

Bluefield receives an illegal participation penalty back them up five yards. Goes for a field goal on a 41-yard line. Kick is good by Justin Mariotti. Wayne leads Bluefield 6-3.

Wayne calls timeout with 2:39 left in the first as time on the play clock runs down.

Adkins runs for another touchdown, this time a 43-yard touchdown run off of a fake pass with Nathan Spurlock. Spurlock converts the 2-point conversion, Wayne leads Bluefield 14-3.

Bluefield receives the ball. Has a penalty on a false start moves back 5 yards, back to the original line of scrimmage. End of the first quarter Wayne leads 14-3.

After one quarter, the Wayne Pioneers have the ball and a 14-3.

On the second play of the second quarter Tyler Adkins throws a 68 yard TD pass to freshman Mason Hodge the point after pass is good Wayne leads 22-3.

Bluefield gets the ball, pass is to high and is intercepted by Nathan Spurlock. Wayne ball.

Wayne scores another touchdown off of the Bluefield interception. Wayne leads 28-3, goes for two points. Wayne leads 30-3.

Bluefield has another interception as Mason Hodge intercepts it will be first and ten for Wayne.

Wayne has second and goal, with 7:25 left in the second quarter.

Spurlock scores for Wayne 36-3. Pioneers go for two points. Complete to Bryan Wayne continues to lead Bluefield 38-3 in the second quarter.

Wayne has five touchdowns on five possessions.

First and ten for the Beavers on their own 34 yard line. Thaddeus Foley on the carry.

After a Bluefield three and out. Wayne takes it's sixth possession for its sixth touchdown, Adkins scores on a five yard keeper.

With 3:34 remain in first half pioneers 46-3. Wayne's average points scored in games is 44 points per game.

At halftime 46-3. Bluefield had six possessions in the first half. After a field goal on their 3rd drive, Bluefield punted three times and turned the ball over on interceptions twice.



Halftime at Mitchell: Wayne leads the Beavers 46-3. Second half action coming soon.

Halftime stats at a glance: Bluefield 9 yards rusing, 62 yards passing. Wayne 266 yards rushing, 68 yards on one pass. Adkins (Wayne) has 117 yards on four carries, three of them for touchdowns.

Third quarter kickoff with Bluefield getting the ball.

Wayne puts in substitute in the third quarter.

Bluefield punts the ball away. Wayne has first and 10 from their own 23 yard line. This is Wayne's worst field position of the night.

First and ten at the Wayne 38 yard line for the Beavers.

Bluefield on it is best play of the night, they are within the 20 yard line for just the second time tonight.

Justin Carter throws another interception Tyler Adkins intercepts the ball intended for Brad Fox. Picked off at the goal line.

Justin Mariotti attempts for the second field goal of the night for the Beavers, the kick is blocked by Mason Hodge. Wayne gets the ball on the 16-yard line.



Wayne keeps the ball for the start of the fourth quarter. Playing a ten minute quarter for the fourth quarter with a running clock.

With 5:25 left in the game Grant Ferguson hands off the ball to James Egnor for another Wayne touchdown. Two point conversion is good Wayne leads 54-3. The touchdown caps off an 84 yard drive with Egnor taking it in for the final yard.

Bluefield brings in freshman QB R.J. Bourne. Wayne is currently playing their second and third string players during the second half.

D.J. Stewart carries the ball to the 46-yard line in Wayne territory.

Kyshon Lee carries the ball for the Beavers at the 37 yard line.

Marqi Dowell carries the ball inside the 16 yard line for the Beavers. Knocking on the door for their first touchdown of the night. With just 1:00 remaining in the game Dowell takes the ball inside the 10 with 0:28 seconds remaining.

With 0:06 remaining in the game the Beavers throw an incomplete pass. Wayne will take over on downs.

Final score Wayne 54, Bluefield 3. With Bluefield substitutes on the field they drove in nine plays 24 yards and their last possession ended on Wayne's nine yard line.
