Hurley’s Bailey outshines Generals

MONTCALM — In a matchup of Bailey vs. Bailey, the visiting player from Hurley High School came out ahead at Montcalm on Friday night.
Dillion Bailey ran 22 times for 162 yards and two second-half scores as the Rebels of Hurley took a 42-18 victory from the Generals at Prudich Field.
Hurley head coach Greg Tester said about Bailey, “He was a workhorse tonight. We were going to keep riding him. The left side of that line was blocking good, and we were going to keep going with what was working. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Bailey said, “I was expecting it. I knew it was going to happen. He told me I was going to run it, over and over.” He also gave credit to his linemen. “They’re all big boys,” he said.
The Rebels amassed 394 rushing yards. Tester said, “We did a pretty good job up front, running the ball.”
Montcalm head coach Jimmy Redmond said, “They’re big and strong. They always are. They outweighed us by probably almost 100 pounds. We couldn’t stop their run. ... Up front, they just pushed us around a little bit.”
Marcus Bailey was a standout on Montcalm’s defense, and he caught five passes from Aaron Presley for 77 yards and ran four times for 17 yards on offense.
Redmond said, “Aaron Presley threw the ball well. Ryan Absher had some good runs for us. Marcus Bailey, he always plays hard and has a good game.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Montcalm drove inside the Hurley 5 only to cough up the ball. Hurley defensive tackle Steven Stacy pounced on it in the end zone for his first varsity touchdown.
Tester said of the 320-pound junior, “He did a flip-flop here at the end of the game because he got his first touchdown.”
The Rebels made it 22-0 at the half via runs of 27 and 3 yards by quarterback Nick Gibson. The junior signal-caller wound up with 14 carries for 118 yards and was 2 for 5 passing.
On Montcalm’s second possession of the third quarter, Presley connected with Marcus Bailey, who scampered down the right sideline to complete a 37-yard scoring play.
Redmond said, “We had to pass. They were jamming it up there big, up front. We didn’t do too badly passing. We found that out.”
Hurley answered with a 10-play march, leaning on runs by Dillion Bailey. He capped the effort with a 20-yard run in the last minute of the third quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, the Rebels’ Greg Stacy picked off a Presley pass and Hurley drove the field again. Gibson took the ball up the middle 18 yards to the end zone, then passed to Tanner Charles for the two-point conversion and a 36-6 lead.
Absher took the ensuing kickoff back 82 yards for Montcalm’s second touchdown.
The Rebels rang up their final points when Dillion Bailey dashed 11 yards untouched to paydirt with 8:49 left in the game.
The Generals ended the scoring with 1:52 remaining on a nifty 25-yard cutback run by Absher.
Tester said, “The defense played really well tonight. When we started substituting there late in the half, they broke a couple of runs on us, but overall the defense had a great effort tonight.”
“We needed this win. We knew we’d have a tough contest tonight. Montcalm has done a good job, they’ve improved a lot. We knew we couldn’t take them lightly. ... They don’t have a lot of numbers, but they play hard. My hat’s off to that ballclub.”
Redmond said the Generals were “arm-tackling a little bit, not like we played the first four games. ... We weren’t wrapping up like we usually do.”
The task now, he said, is to “turn the page. Learn from our mistakes. Defensively, we’re going to have to stop the run again.”
Montcalm travels to Midland Trail next Friday night, while Hurley will host Thomas Walker High School.
Tester said, “I’m just happy our guys got back to .500, and we’ve got a tough one next week. We’ve got to get ready for Thomas Walker.”
Dillion Bailey said about the victory, “It’s great. We’re back where we can do something, now.”
